Today’s a special day in Mexico. October the 2^nd is never forgotten.

It’s been 40 years since the Tlatelolco Massacre in Mexico City.

A repressive action from the government of Díaz Ordaz caused one of the greatest scars of our history, an infamous day that is a testament of the authoritarianism of the regime that our country had.

A student movement demanding among other things, freedom of speech was gathered in a public square in the city called Plaza de las Tres Culturas. While the pacific demonstration was taking place a pseudo-military action started. A group of unidentified snipers (with orders from the government) started shooting against the unarmed people in the square. Entire families, students, teachers, parents with their kids were there. Meanwhile a group of soldiers surrounded the exits of the square limiting the escape routes for the people. It’s been said that the soldiers weren’t aware of the orders those snipers had and they returned the fire believing it was a hostile action from the demonstrators. There were even soldiers trying to protect the crowd while they protected themselves. The government reported around 30 dead, but eye witness accounts state there were at least a few hundred dead. That day almost all the movement leaders were captured by a third contingent that’s known as the Olimpia Battalion and then incarcerated.

After everything ended the square was “cleaned” and later the government denied they were the ones who started the aggression and blamed the students for the violence. Their objective was accomplished, the leader-less movement disbanded out of fear and other part of it became radical, starting urban guerrillas.

That same year the Olympics took place in the city as if nothing ever happened.

Of course that year was known all over the world as a year of revolutions, but that year and that special day for Mexico symbolized the end of OUR revolution… the all mighty government stated how far they would go to stay in control. In a way, hope was lost.

I just know what I’ve read or seen in documentaries and even some things my mom has told me. Still I feel scared and angry every time I see a video or pictures of that day, watching the witnesses tell their stories, the awful things they saw and experienced… for me it’s heartbreaking.

Today Mexico is in a… how to call it, a bad place, to be polite. I feel quite hopeless and I’m even scared of what might happen. I absolutely hate politics but not getting involved might get things worse. Unfortunately people is too involved in the economical issues we’re going trough (oil and it’s price, being soo close to the american economics) to notice all the other issues we have to deal with. The political division is too hard, there’s a tiny gray common area in the middle of the extremes, but it’s insufficient for any real commitment or compromise for the greater good.

I’m scared because sometimes I feel like we need another revolution, another big movement in order to wake up and do something, to drag ourselves out of conformism and confusion, to determine once and for all an identity and get ourselves to a better place. But it’s scary to think like that...
